Howdy y'all, I put up 2 hummingbird feeders yesterday and they have found their nectar. This hummingbird is a variety called the Black-chinned hummingbird, instead of the ruby throat you will see a band of purple around his throat and his bill is much longer than the ruby-throated variety. Howdy y'all, this fine feathered friend, the evening grosbeak was one of my first patrons at my birdfeeder. Just so happens that sunflower seeds are a staple in his diet. This is a mature male about 6 inches long with a wingspan of 12-14 inches. Its distinctive mark is the yellow bar above his eyes. Howdy y'all, I first thought this was a redtail hawk but upon further investigation I determined this is a species known as the broadwing hawk. It is about the same size as a redtail but has a much broader wing and the heavily mottled chest feathers. They say these birds and see mice on the ground from almost 500 feet in the air. The broader wings make them highly capable of riding the thermals to very high altitudes.
